ALS, 1872 July 24 : Buffalo, to Day O. Kellogg.

Sends a sympathy note to a childhood friend upon the death of his sister. Recounts his thankfulness for old friends and a rewarding life. Describes his retirement after serving as president: "When I have nothing to do for myself or others, I take great pleasure in reading history, science, and an occasional play of Shakespeare or a novel."
